I have finally located (after years of searching) a manual produced
exclusively for Lincoln-Mercury Pantera dealers. It was produced in 1972 to
"teach" Pantera Dealers about the cars and also to inform salespeople "how" to
sell the car. It is about 300 pages in length and it is called
"Pantera....The Car..The Sale." The formal name for the manual is "Dealership
Product and Merchandising Guide". Dealer items related to the Pantera are
extremely hard to find due to the "Non-Public" nature of the items. There is
an incredible array of information on who the typical(?) Pantera buyer is,
what they might drive up to the dealership in, what kind of job they
have....and on and on.
I will expound on one item I located in the manual that I thought was really
interesting. There was a spot in the manual for the dealer to insert
information about the Pantera such as literature and newspaper and magazine
articles and the like. This particular dealer somehow got ahold of the
"script" that was read at the 1972 introduction of the Pantera at the New York
Auto Show. This was not from the original introduction of the Pantera in the
US, but appartently the "Re-Introduction". It is almost as good as being
there, 26 years ago. There was a real suprise to me at the end of the script.
See if you knew about it!
This is the text, exactly as written:
Revised 3/15/72
New York Auto Show
Script: de TOMASO PANTERA
Ladies and Gentlemen, welcome to Lincoln-Mercury's Pantera exhibit. We'd first
like you to know this is not a dream car -- but a car actually being produced
in limited quantity. It is being imported for Lincoln-Mercury Division, and
is available through a selected number of its dealers. Alejandro deTomaso of
Modena, Italy conceived the Pantera -- from cockpit layout and monocoque
chassis to four-wheel independent suspension and mid-ship engine placement.
The internationally famed body builder, Ghia of Turin, Italy designed the
coachwork. The engine, a 351 cu. in. V-8 is by Ford of America. So you can
see, Pantera is truley the unique achievement of two continents and, we think,
destined to be hailed as the most impressive car of its class ever to be
offered in America. Alejandro de Tomaso, a former international race driver
and designer of Grand Prix sports racing cars, has truly surpassed himself in
the Pantera, which incidentally is Italian for Panther. His design marries
form and function, and sheathes it in tautly smooth steel, imparting the car
with a feeling of lightness and feline grace. Yet Pantera, with body and
frame welded as a single structure, is a singularly light yet most rigid car
of high performance.
..Open Door...
Pantera's sound-proofed cockpit is elegantly appointed and richly designed.
You'll note an emphasis on luxurious comfort, and not the usual spartan
austerity associated with sports car interiors. The instrument layout and
central command console are elegantly in keeping with space-age technology.
The driver has excellent visibility of operating controls and easy accedd to
the bank of rocker-type switches. You'll find uncompromising care given to
every detail of the interior, from the richly tailored vinyl upholstery and
body-contoured bucket seats to the curved glass of the side windows. And, of
course, Pantera is a high-performance automobile -- so as you might expect
there are engineering inovations here, too. The mid-ship engine placement,
for example, provides ideal weight distribution fore-and-aft and gives the car
unsurpassed roadholding qualities. Each specifically cast magnesium wheel is
independently suspended and given its own power-assisted disc brake, providing
Pantera superb braking ability. Due to the additional weight at the rear of
the Pantera, you will notice that the tires size has been increased on the
rear wheels for better balance and handling. The 351 cu. in. Ford V-8
delivers power through a five-speed transmission fully synchronised in all
forward gears. Yes, Ladies and Gentlemen, Pantera is unique among cars at the
auto show this year.
The Pantera is available through selected Lincoln-Mercury Dealers in the New
York area .... (point to sign). Why not visit the dealer nearest you for a
demonstration drive?
For more information on this new and exciting addition to Lincoln-Mercury's
array of fine automobiles, please contact our representative here at the show.
Making it's debut at the New York Auto Show is the new Pantera GT-4 (point)
flown over from Italy. Mr.___________ accompanied the car and will gladly
answer any questions you may have.
I wonder who they sent over with the Group 4?

I Have the book Automobile Quarterly from 1970 Vol.8 no.4, It has pictures
and article on the very 1st. car built including the wooden mockup. push
buttion and yellow , should make Bo Bo happy. The article uses the small
deTomaso 11 times and the large DeTomaso 4 times it depends where it is used
in the sentence. You may be able to check the book out of the library if you
cant locate one.

In my never ending quest for all memorabilia of Detomaso cars, I have come
across the following bubble gum card. I hope you are sitting down. If you
aren't, please do so before reading any further.
The front side has a picture of a Pantera and the bottom of the card has the
title "Jackson Five Pantera". The back of the card has the following
information. "Jackson Five Pantera - Barris created this wild Ford Pantera
with a pop out moon-styled sun roof, half mast vinyl roof, and custom front
and rear nerf bars. It's got a flex-powered side exhaust, mag finned wheels
and steel belted radials. Inside, the quardraphonic AM/FM tape radio and
black tuffted foam leather interior contrasts with the lime gold green flake
lacquer paint.
George Barris should be shot....anyone know where this car is and who the
lucky owner is currently? The flex-powered side exhaust should give it away!

{{I got an emergency fax from someone named "Tommy" in Norway, asking for
frame dimensions to straighten a 81 GTS damaged Pantera.}}
Be aware that the last two pages of the white-page Tech Service Bulletins
(#47-11-04) has frame & suspension pickup dimensions for the '71-'74 cars.
They aren't very clear (won't scan) and use non-std reference points but will
be better than nothing at all, if "Tommy" has a frame machine available. J

The Volume 8, Number 4 Automobile Quarterly did have a cover. It is
unfortunate that it is missing on the copy you found, because it has a front
view picture of the prototype Pantera on it. The cover is dark blue, and like
all other AQ's it is hardbound. The going rate for that issue is $75.
As a side note, that article on the prototype Pantera is the first article
printed on the car. It was so secret at the time, not even they were supposed
to be photographing it! HA HA!

Reading your post again, I think you meant that it did not have a paper cover
for the outside of the book. This is correct. AQ's did not have a paper
slipcover to protect the exterior.

On the subject of manuals, I've got what I thought was a complete set.
I've got the factory Pantera manual (white vinyl 3 ring binder, came
with the car), the laminated electrical diagram, the parts manual
(purchased from PPC - the one with the red GT5 on the cover), and the
manual of TSB's (white paper bound, also purchased from PPC). Is there
another collection of POCA TSB's. The reason I ask is that the car came
with several loose leaf POCA TSB's. I thought these were going to be
included in the TSB's manual but it appears to contain only Ford and
Detomaso bulletins.
