Sidemount air filter for hood clearance.
The 223's valves were considerably offset to one side, which limited their
diameter and the engine's breathing ability. The 429/460 Ford and engines
like the Buick nailhead and V6 do this as well. Best as I can tell it was to
induce 'tumble' into the airflow pattern within the cylinder to aid low end
torque and fuel economy.
Manifolding was also compromised for hood clearance.
Oil tubes for rocker shafts are held in with a light press fit. They must be
removed before the rocker shafts are removed. Note valve adjustment screws in
rockers.
Heat bolt torque pattern for 223 Six.
Offenhauser still makes this dual carb manifold for the 223 Six!
223 oiling system. A drilling in the cam times squirts of oil up to the
cylinder head. A separate pipe ran oil down directly to the distributor gear.
