Got a call from a friend in Virginia this morning. His daughter had
been up late and didn't want to get up for some early morning weekend
thing at school. After half a dozen attempts he got pissed. This was a
job for rock and roll. So he strung enough wire to move the big
speakers from the living room to just inside her bedroom door, put Pink
Floyd's 'Dark Side of the Moon' in the player, turned the volume all the
way to the right, selected "Time" and pressed 'Play'.

No, kid, it doesn't sound anything like Funky-Monkey Badass Flip-Flop
or any of the other junk you listen to... He reports it is quite
effective at waking up fourteen year olds.

"ticking away the moments that make up the dull day
you fritter and waste the hours in an offhand way
kicking around on a piece of ground in your old town
waiting for someone or something to show you the way

tired of laying in the sunshine, staying home to watch the rain
you are young, life is long, and there is time to kill today
and then one day you find that ten years gave got behind you
no one told you when to run, you missed the starting gun

and you run and you run to catch up with the sun, but it's sinking
and racing around to come up behind you again
the sun is the same in a relative way, but you're older
shorter of breath and one day closer to death

every year is getting shorter, never seem to find the time
plans that either come to naught or half a page of scribbled lines
hanging on in quiet desperation is the English way
the time is gone, the song is over, thought I'd something more to say"
