In May of 2008 I bought a Seig X2 "mini-mill" from Toolsnow.com in Missouri. The X2 is a small desktop manual milling machine. They're quite popular for conversion to desktop CNC. I bought the CNCFusion XYZ ballscrew kit and the Xylotex 425 oz-in prewired control box and steppers, but I went quite a bit farther, with a power drawbar, limit switches, head counterweight, and I'm working on an automatic tool changer.

The conversion has taken a lot of time, and my old Gorton vertical mill has spent more time making X2 parts these last few months than it spent working all last year. I'm trying to get it all done in one swell foop so I don't have to interrupt production use to make more mill mods.

Anyway, here's what I've documented so far:

  • comments and notes
  • X2 mini-mill CNC conversion, part 1 (X/Y ballscrews)
  • X2 mini-mill CNC conversion, part 2 (Z ballscrew)
  • X2 mini-mill CNC conversion, part 3 (power drawbar)
  • X2 mini-mill CNC conversion, part 4 (Z counterweight)
  • X2 mini-mill CNC conversion, part 5 (motor fan)
  • X2 mini-mill CNC conversion, part 6 (central oiling system)
  • X2 mini-mill CNC conversion, part 7 (Y-axis extension)
  • X2 mini-mill CNC conversion, part 8 (limit switches)
  • X2 mini-mill CNC conversion, part 9 (coolant, enclosure)
